JOHN JAMES SHAWYER, CHEMIST, SWINDON
John James Shawyer was born in Clevedon in Somerset in 1857 and was the son of a School Master. There is an early mention of Shawyer working within the E.R. ING shop in Swindon as early as 1876.
By 1881 he had qualified as a Chemist and was working in Farringdon in Oxfordshire.
In Farringdon he met his future wife Alice Margaret Liddiard, daughter to a local butcher, who he married in 1882.
It appears that they then moved to Swindon to take over the chemist shop of E.R. ING around. They had two sons and two daughters.
He was Mayor of Swindon 1912-1913.
John James Shawyer died in 1915 aged 58 and is buried in Radnor Street Cemetery, Swindon.
Following his father's death the business is taken over and expanded by the oldest son, Arthur John Shawyer. The business expands to include at least three sites: 12 Wood Street, 10 Rodbourne Road and 22 Farringdon Street. Arthur died in 1959 in Swindon aged 73.
His oldest daughter, Daisy Liddiard Shawyer, married Frank Longland, a missionary, in 1910 and she is listed in the 1911 census as being a Doctor (Missionary).
Daisy & Frank travelled extensively throughout Africa including the Belgium Congo, Mozambique and Tanganyika (modern day Rawanda & Burundi). Their son, Cedric James Longford, was born in Bolobo, Congo. He later became a surgeon. Daisy died in 1963 at Drummond House, Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire aged 80.
